Workshop 1: Giving Students a Reality Check

Dr. Glasser's Choice Theory is a great insight for how and why we make our choices. The theory describes our basic needs and how they affect our decision making. Learn how Choice theory is a way to motivate students to work toward their "quality world". A basic premise of Reality Therapy is that we only have the power to control ourselves and not others. Learn to use the WDEP method as a tool to help individuals reach their inner excellence.
Workshop 2: Importance of Collective Care Team - Presenter Lysa Mullady - Deauville Gardens East Elementary Counselor & NYSSCA President
Within a school system, the Collective Care Team is comprised of the counselor, social worker, psychologist and nurse. Defining clear expectations and roles for each member creates a Strong support system that can successfully navigate our student’s mental health needs. As counselors, we need to advocate for ourselves as much as we advocate for our students. Currently, NYSSCA is working with NYSUT to create awareness statewide on the importance of the Collective Care Team. This workshop will highlight the work being done to advocate for school counselors and how your school would benefit from the Collective Care Team model.
Workshop 3: Guiding Hope: Practical Strategies for Supporting Students Facing Sexual Abuse/Assault or Dating Violence - Presenter - Heather Parrott, PhD - Director of Development & SAFE, ECLI-VIBES
When students disclose experiences of sexual abuse, sexual assault, or dating violence, school guidance counselors often become their first line of support. This session equips counselors with essential strategies to respond compassionately and effectively to disclosures while maintaining the student’s safety and well-being. Attendees will gain insights into trauma-informed approaches and how to connect students with vital community resources. By addressing key challenges and best practices, this session empowers counselors to foster a supportive environment and facilitate a path toward healing and justice for their students.
Workshop 4. Paving Pathways to Success: The Power of Partnership in Elementary
School Counseling - Presenter: Justin Morales - School Counselor, Sachem EastElementary Schools (5 in Total)
This workshop will touch on Jean Piaget’s 4 Stages of Cognitive Development, offering
insights into how children at this stage process information and develop cognitively.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to tailor counseling approaches
and interventions to meet the unique needs of elementary students.
